Based on thorough review and analysis of food security situation in Sudan, the Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC) Famine Review Committee (FRC) has confirmed famine in El Fasher (Northern Darfur) and Kadugli (Southern Kordofan), and with risk of famine in 20 other areas in Sudan. This confirmation of famine underscores that Sudan continues to face a humanitarian catastrophe, with over 21 million people experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity as of September 2025.Â
While some areas in eastern Sudan have stabilised and show signs of improvement, intensified conflict in Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan is deepening the crisis. Famine (IPC Phase 5) is ongoing and expected to persist through January 2026 in El Fasher and Kadugli towns, and 20 areas across Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofanare at risk of Famine.
Only a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access and rethinking aid from the current egosystem to ecosystem that prioritizes people-centered humanitarian action can prevent further deterioration and save lives.
I was honored and humbled to be a member of the Famine Review Committee on Sudan.
